Online storage has become a necessity for people working in the digital world. There are so many options to choose from, but not all of them are created equally. Some online storage providers sell your data to advertisers while others cloud over your own personal rights with legal jargon. There is a new project on the horizon that offers something different. SARVVID is on its way to changing the way people think about cloud storage. Their decentralized platform offers more control and security for your files.

The whole data economy divided into the world of SARVVID

The world of cloud storage is quickly becoming overpopulated with big players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. All of them offer some form of storage at a cheap price, but there comes a hidden price to pay with your privacy. You are giving up control when you use these providers for your data storage needs.

With SARVVID, you are not giving up control of your data because it is stored in decentralized locations across the globe. SARVVID encrypts your data, so it can be accessed by you, not third parties. You have total control over who has access to what data.

Here is a report which shares the following:

SARVVID offers users three different levels of privacy for their files. The highest level is called Private, which allows you to run a VPN through the platform. It hides the IP addresses associated with the file making it impossible for third parties to access your personal information or any location history that may be stored within your file. The second level is called Confidential which works in the same way as Private except that no VPN is used to hide where you are located while using this level of privacy.

Online storage is in a state of flux these days, with more and more people turning to decentralized solutions. This article will go through the risks of centralized storage, the benefits of decentralized storage, and finally some statistics on how many people are sticking with centralized versus decentralized storage. Let's get into it!

What's centralized vs. decentralized?

Centralized systems work like banks; all your data is stored in one location (on the server) and you need access to that server for anything of value to be retrieved. Decentralized systems spread your data out across different computers (called nodes) so it becomes almost impossible for any single computer to fail or be hacked without losing data elsewhere.

Around the year of 2010, a lot of people were skeptical to choose a decentralized data. Now, looking back, this was the wrong way to think. A decentralized system (DHT or BitTorrent) gave much better security than banks or companies like Facebook. For example, in 2011 "a massive attack on the largest BitTorrent tracker distributed code twice the size of all pirated material on the Pirate Bay combined" revealing how centralized it can be.

Ease of use

Decentralized file storage makes things very simple for anyone no matter what computer they are using. No need to setup VPNs or anything like that because everything is handled by code and encryption. To retrieve your data you just open up a browser and go where it is stored, download what you need and leave. In the coming years of 2020, a lot of people started trusting the decentralization process more. Lets' take a look at this statistic here:

The first point to note is that the number of people who don't know how to use decentralized storage has gone down significantly. The second thing to note is that more and more people are using decentralized storage as the years go by. This might be because we talk about these systems a lot more or it might be because we trust them more and more.

Security

For security, centralized systems like CloudStor and Dropbox offer about 2048 bits of encryption (if they don't encrypt at all). Which means if you setup a data vault for yourself, your data is only 100% safe from someone cracking the key. Also, the company has to keep paying for the servers to keep running which can be expensive.

Decentralized systems are harder to crack. They are much larger in size meaning if someone wants to crack your data they need millions of computers working at once which could take months or years! As for mining, this creates a decentralized system that could go on long after the servers have been turned off. You do not need to upload your data or decrypt it back into an easily breakable format. And decentralized systems are much faster!

Conclusion

So now that you know what centralized and decentralized storage is you can now make an informed decision about what type of online storage you want for yourself. Either way, the Internet Archive has been a pretty good resource for those looking for centralized solutions as well as those looking for decentralized ones.

What do you guys think? Is there a case for decentralization in the future? Will it work? Do you have a favorite decentralized solution? Let us know in the comments below!
